Doctoral Position (PhD) in Historically Informed Dependency Studies

About the role

The Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS) invites three PhD candidates to join a four‑year, fixed‑term doctoral program starting 1 October 2026. Candidates will develop independent research projects within Historically Informed Dependency Studies (HIDS) and contribute to the centre’s interdisciplinary agenda.

Key responsibilities

• Formulate and conduct an independent research project related to one of the BCDSS research areas.
• Publish research findings in academic journals and present at conferences.
• Collaborate with the international, interdisciplinary BCDSS community on joint research activities.
• Participate actively in the BCDSS Doctoral Program, including coursework, skills training, and regular supervision.

Required profile

• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant humanities or social‑science discipline.
• Strong interest in interdisciplinary and comparative research on Strong Asymmetrical Dependencies.
• Ability to design and execute an original research project.
• Excellent academic writing and communication skills in English.
