Master Thesis: Virtual Sensor & State Estimation for Fuel Cell Systems

About the role

Airbus ZEROe is looking for a master‑level student to conduct a thesis on virtual sensor and state‑estimation development for fuel‑cell systems. You will join the Hamburg production site, work with modern simulation tools, and contribute to the next generation of zero‑emission aircraft.

Key responsibilities

• Perform a comprehensive literature review on virtual sensing, state estimation, and model‑based diagnostics for fuel‑cell systems.
• Develop and implement component models (degradation, performance) relevant to virtual sensing.
• Design, test, and evaluate virtual‑sensor algorithms and state‑estimation techniques such as Kalman, Extended Kalman, and particle filters.
• Use MATLAB/Simulink and Python simulation environments for model development, algorithm testing, and data analysis.
• Analyse robustness of sensors and estimators under varied operating and fault conditions.
• Document methodology and results in a master’s thesis and present progress regularly to the ZEROe team.

Required profile

• Enrolled full‑time master student in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Control Systems Engineering or a related field.
• Strong academic background in control theory, system identification, estimation theory and data analysis.
• Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and/or Python.
• Familiarity with fuel‑cell technology and model‑based development is a plus.
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English; German is a plus.
