Assistant Professor – Critical Dance Studies (PhD)

About the role

The Institute for Theater Studies at Freie Universität Berlin seeks a dedicated scholar to join its Critical Dance Studies division. The position combines independent research, teaching, and programme coordination within an international, interdisciplinary environment.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct independent research projects and contribute to the Institute’s research culture, especially in critical dance studies.
• Teach and assess courses in the Bachelor program in theater studies and the Master’s program in critical dance studies, following university teaching regulations.
• Assist in the coordination, course design, and administrative tasks of the Master’s program.
• Develop and maintain collaborations with external dance institutions.

Required profile

• PhD in critical dance studies, or a PhD in theater studies/related field with a focus on dance.
• Minimum three years of full‑time academic or specialist practical experience after graduation.
• Strong publication record in interdisciplinary, theory‑informed critical dance studies (preferred).
• Research interests in decolonial approaches and pre‑1900 dance cultures (preferred).
• Fluent English (C2) and good German (B2).
• Teaching experience in critical dance studies.
• Project‑management experience, including web‑presence coordination.
