Design Physicist – Stellarator Fusion

About the role

Proxima Fusion is building the world’s first commercial stellarator fusion power plant. As a Design Physicist you will shape the magnetic architecture that confines burning plasma, turning advanced scientific concepts into manufacturable coil systems.

Key responsibilities

• Define and optimise 3‑D magnetic field configurations for reactor‑relevant stellarator designs.
• Explore equilibrium solutions and electromagnetic coil layouts that balance physics performance, engineering constraints and cost drivers.
• Collaborate across plasma physics, magnet technology, cryogenics, manufacturing and control disciplines to resolve critical trade‑offs.
• Integrate high‑temperature superconducting magnet requirements with practical hardware considerations.
• Use advanced simulation tools and systems‑level thinking to accelerate the path from design to hardware.

Required profile

• Strong background in plasma physics or related fields, with experience in magnetic confinement concepts.
• Demonstrated ability to work on interdisciplinary teams and translate scientific requirements into engineering solutions.
• Proactive mindset with ownership of system‑level design decisions.
