Director of Design, Northern Europe (Germany focus)

About the role

The Director Design will lead design, management and strategic initiatives for hotel development projects across Germany and the wider Northern Europe region. Reporting to the Hotel Lifecycle & Growth function, you will work autonomously on new‑build, conversion, acquisition and renewal projects, ensuring brand‑aligned outcomes from feasibility to opening.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with regional development teams to assess project viability and create design strategies that support signings and long‑term asset performance.
• Partner with Engineering and Interior Design to develop innovative, practical, brand‑aligned design solutions.
• Align design initiatives with owner investment objectives, brand vision and project standards, presenting concepts at key project stages.
• Lead Property Improvement Plan processes for acquisitions and renewals, including site assessments, reporting and owner engagement.
• Oversee review of hotel projects against IHG Brand Standards, covering concept, detailed design, documentation, inspections and pre‑opening readiness.
• Support owners throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring timely progress, clear decisions and effective communication on cost, programme and brand compliance.
• Provide market and project feedback to brand teams to refine future standards and design guides.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Architecture, Construction, Project Management or a related discipline.
• Extensive experience leading design for hotel development projects, including new builds, conversions and renovations.
• Proven ability to work autonomously, manage complex stakeholder relationships and make commercial and technical judgments.
• Strong understanding of sustainable design principles and IHG’s Journey to Tomorrow commitments.
