Financial Controller – Finance & Operations Lead

About the role

The ZOE Institute for Future-Fit Economies is seeking a Financial Controller to lead its finance function. You will work in a small, impact‑driven team at the intersection of policy, research and civil society, ensuring sound financial management while supporting the institute’s strategic goals.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee cost tracking, payroll, accounting and year‑end closing, with support from internal and external advisors.
• Lead organisational budgeting and project‑level financial reporting.
• Drive the transition to a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and maintain related Excel tools.
• Coordinate across teams, mentor colleagues and contribute to organisational development.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in finance, accounting or business management, preferably in non‑profit organisations.
• Proven experience leading projects or teams.
• Knowledge of German HGB and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
• Fluent in English and proficient in German.
• Based in Germany or Belgium and willing to travel occasionally.

Required skills

• Advanced Excel proficiency.
• Experience with ERP system implementation.
• Understanding of German HGB accounting principles.
• Familiarity with IFRS reporting standards.
