Junior Professor – Mathematics of Machine Learning

About the role

The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich invites applications for a three‑year Junior Professorship (W1) in Mathematics of Machine Learning. The successful candidate will join a leading European research university and contribute to both research and teaching at the interface of mathematics and machine learning.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct independent research on the mathematical foundations of machine learning, covering topics such as deep learning theory, optimization, high‑dimensional probability, signal and image processing, inverse problems and harmonic analysis.
• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to machine learning mathematics.
• Seek third‑party funding and collaborate with national and international research initiatives.

Required profile

• Doctoral degree of excellent quality in a relevant field (e.g., mathematics, statistics, computer science).
• No more than four years elapsed between the doctorate and the application deadline (extensions possible for caregiving).
• Demonstrated teaching ability at university level and a clear commitment to an academic career.
