PhD Position in Algal Zygospore Research

About the role

The Institute of Biology’s Department of Plant Physiology offers a PhD position to investigate the transition from zygote to resistant zygospore in the model alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The project combines plant physiology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry and molecular biology to uncover how photosynthetic cells adapt to extreme stress.

Key responsibilities

• Experimental investigation of zygotes and zygospores using diverse laboratory methods.
• Cultivation and maintenance of algal cultures, including selection of suitable mutants.
• Purification and biochemical characterization of the resistant cell‑wall polymer from zygospores.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in biochemistry, biology or a related field.
• Very good written and spoken English.
• Experience with microorganism cultivation and laboratory techniques in plant physiology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry or molecular biology is desirable.
• Ability to work independently, strong commitment and teamwork skills.
• Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration.
