PhD student in development and processing of composite structures

About the role

Airbus Defence and Space is seeking a PhD student to join the Central R&T Materials Domain in Ottobrunn, near Munich. The position starts as soon as possible and lasts 36 months, focusing on the development and processing of advanced composite structures.

Key responsibilities

• Screen, develop and test composite materials (physico‑chemical, mechanical, electromagnetic absorption).
• Model and understand electromagnetic absorbers.
• Apply advanced experimental, numerical and machine‑learning methods for data analysis and material design.
• Transfer polymer composite manufacturing from 2D to 3D processes such as winding and resin transfer moulding (RTM).
• Integrate functional features into 3D CFRP sub‑components.
• Write scientific papers, technical reports and present results at conferences.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Physics or a related field.
• Proficiency with office applications (Google Workspace).
• Python programming skills and basic knowledge of machine‑learning tools.
• Fundamental experience with polymeric composites, coupon manufacturing and basic physico‑chemical and mechanical testing.
• Full professional command of English and German.
