Professorship in Theoretical Physics – Physics of Living Systems

About the role

The Institute of Physics at the University of Freiburg invites applications for a W3 professorship in Theoretical Physics with a focus on the physics of living systems. The position strengthens interdisciplinary research at the interface of physics, life sciences, and data science.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and lead an independent research group investigating signalling complexes, sub‑cellular dynamics, self‑organization, energy transduction, biomechanics and information processing in living matter.
• Teach undergraduate (B.Sc.) and graduate (M.Sc.) courses in Physics, primarily in German, and supervise theses.
• Secure competitive third‑party funding and contribute to collaborative research initiatives, including links with the Cluster of Excellence CIBSS.
• Participate in interdisciplinary projects within EUCOR and the broader university community.

Required profile

• Outstanding PhD in physics or a closely related field.
• Internationally visible scientific achievements in theoretical modelling of complex or biological systems.
• Excellent publication record in quantitative life‑science research.
• Demonstrated teaching experience and didactic aptitude.
• Ability to acquire external funding and lead an independent research team.
