Research Assistant (pre‑doc) – 75% part‑time (until 2030)

About the role

The Institute of Geological Sciences at Freie Universität Berlin seeks a pre‑doctoral Research Assistant (75% part‑time) to join Collaborative Research Center SFB 1759. The position supports a PhD project investigating Mars’ subsurface environment and groundwater evolution using integrated numerical modelling.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and run large‑scale impact and hydrothermal system models.
• Couple impact, interior evolution, and water‑rock reaction simulations.
• Analyse model outcomes to assess the formation and sustainability of habitable subsurface habitats on Mars.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
• Prepare scientific reports, publications, and presentations.

Required profile

• Master’s degree (or equivalent) in geosciences, planetary science, physics, chemistry, or a related field.
• Strong interest in planetary habitability and numerical modelling.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Motivation to pursue a doctoral degree.
