Senior Java Backend Engineer

About the role

Atolls is looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer to join its Munich engineering team. You will design, build and scale high‑performance backend services using modern Java and cloud‑native patterns, contributing to a global shopping platform used by millions.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable backend services with Java 17/11+
• Build microservice‑based and event‑driven architectures
• Create and evolve APIs using GraphQL
• Work with Spring Boot and Spring Reactive (WebFlux)
• Design and optimise data models in MySQL and NoSQL stores (DynamoDB, MongoDB)
• Ensure high performance, reliability and scalability of systems
• Write clean, well‑tested code and implement performance and end‑to‑end testing
• Collaborate with product managers, frontend engineers and DevOps
• Contribute to architectural decisions and mentor junior engineers
• Participate in AI‑enabled feature development and backend integrations

Required profile

• 8+ years of professional backend development experience
• Strong expertise in Java 17 (or Java 11+)
• Deep knowledge of Spring Boot and Spring Reactive
• Solid experience with MySQL and at least one NoSQL database (DynamoDB or MongoDB)
• Hands‑on experience with Kubernetes and cloud‑native deployments
• Ability to design microservice and event‑driven systems
