Technical Packaging Engineer – Sustainable Packaging

About the role

Join METRO's global headquarters team as a Technical Packaging Engineer, driving sustainable, cost‑effective packaging solutions for Own Brand products across 21 countries. You will be the central expert ensuring technical excellence, regulatory compliance, and alignment with METRO’s brand strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Develop new Own Brand packaging solutions for food and near‑food items that meet professional customer needs, regulatory standards, and cost targets.
• Lead optimization projects to harmonise existing packaging, generate cost savings, and enhance the end‑to‑end supply chain.
• Implement packaging designs that comply with PPWR requirements, focusing on reduction, recyclability, recycled‑content targets and eco‑design principles.
• Act as the competence‑center partner for packaging topics across all 21 METRO countries.
• Coordinate collection, management and analysis of packaging data within the specification data‑management platform.
• Oversee regulatory compliance assessments for packaging materials and formats.
• Support packaging complaint and incident management, ensuring root‑cause analysis and corrective actions.

Required profile

• Technical expertise in packaging development and sustainability.
• Strong understanding of regulatory requirements for packaging materials.
• Experience collaborating with suppliers and cross‑functional stakeholders.
• Ability to manage projects across multiple countries and drive alignment.
