Attorney-Advisor – Legal Counsel for Education Agency

About the role

The Attorney-Advisor provides legal assistance, advice, and representation to the General Counsel of the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) and its regional leadership. This role supports a wide range of legal matters, including special education, employment, ethics, and government regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the General Counsel in planning and delivering legal advice for DoDEA and its regional leaders.
• Represent the agency in collective bargaining sessions, hearings, and administrative proceedings before bodies such as the EEOC, MSPB, and FLRA.
• Prepare and manage judicial litigation matters, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
• Conduct extensive legal research and draft policies on special education, education law, and related federal and state statutes.
• Provide expert guidance on Government Ethics, FOIA, Privacy Act, Administrative Procedure Act, and other federal practice areas.
• Develop training tools and preventative legal guidance for educators, administrators, and field attorneys.
• Support labor and civilian personnel matters, including employee relations, equal opportunity, and civil rights.

Required profile

• U.S. citizenship and proof of eligibility for selective service (for male applicants born after 12/31/1959).
• Ability to complete a one‑year trial period and meet direct‑deposit payroll requirements.
• Strong background in education law, special education law, and federal employment regulations.
• Experience representing an organization in administrative hearings and grievance proceedings.
