Automotive Engineering Intern - Formula Student Simulation & Dynamics

About the role

BeamNG GmbH offers a one-semester internship for Formula Student (Formula SAE) participants who want to see how real-world vehicle physics becomes a virtual simulator. You will learn the full vehicle creation pipeline by helping build a Formula Student race car model and tuning it for skidpad, acceleration, autocross and endurance, while documenting the process so that other teams can use BeamNG for virtual testing and early-stage development.

Key responsibilities

• Develop the physics model of a Formula Student race car in BeamNG using JBeam
• Create or adapt the vehicle's 3D mesh for visual representation
• Select and integrate chassis, suspension, wheel and powertrain configurations
• Implement simulation scenarios for core Formula Student dynamic events
• Write documentation and tutorials to help future Formula Student teams use BeamNG for virtual vehicle testing

Required profile

• Currently pursuing a degree in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field
• Active or past involvement in a Formula Student team, ideally in chassis and suspension design or vehicle dynamics simulation, and familiarity with the rulebook and design constraints
• Eagerness to learn text-based physics configuration (Jbeam) and basic scripting, even without prior coding experience
• Strong communication: able to explain complex engineering problems clearly to others

Required skills

• Familiarity with BeamNG, VSCode, Blender and GIT/SVN is an advantage but not mandatory
