Doctoral Researcher (PhD) – International Criminal Law & Gender

About the role

The International Centre for War Crimes Trials (ICWC) at the University of Marburg invites applications for ten doctoral researcher positions within the DFG Research Training Group 3159 “Gender and Gendering in Contexts of International Criminal Law”. The role is a part‑time (75%) fixed‑term appointment for up to four years, starting on 1 February 2027.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct independent doctoral research on a topic aligned with the RTG’s interdisciplinary programme.
• Provide research assistance to the RTG’s ongoing projects.
• Participate actively on‑site in the RTG’s core programme and events (mandatory attendance).
• Contribute to publications and presentations arising from the research group.

Required profile

• Above‑average university degree (Master, state exam or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as peace and conflict studies, gender studies, history, literature, political science, law, sociology, theology or economics.
• Prior knowledge of international (criminal) law, transitional justice and/or gender studies is advantageous.
• English proficiency at C1 level (CEFR); German skills or willingness to learn German are an asset.
• Strong team spirit, commitment to academic excellence and interdisciplinary cooperation.
