Engineering Lead – Multimodal AI Research

About the role

We are seeking a Member of Engineering to lead multimodality research for next‑generation AI systems in Germany. You will shape a new research area, defining how advanced models understand and interact with visual information while collaborating with a highly skilled research team.

Key responsibilities

• Own the multimodality roadmap and drive adoption across AI models.
• Build and launch initial image‑input capabilities for advanced coding and agentic systems.
• Define the evolution from adapter‑based approaches to native multimodal architectures.
• Design and execute full‑lifecycle experiments, from hypothesis to large‑scale training and analysis.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams on evaluation, architecture, data, and post‑training.
• Create custom datasets and evaluation strategies for multimodal software‑engineering capabilities.
• Help establish a new research function, balancing innovation with practical delivery.

Required profile

• Strong machine‑learning expertise with a research‑driven mindset.
• Proven experience building large‑scale AI systems and production‑grade vision‑language models.
• Ability to work independently in ambiguous, fast‑paced environments.
• Experience leading or building 0‑to‑1 projects with broad ownership.
