Master Thesis – Validation of Decoupled Testing for FLUMIAS ISS Payloads

About the role

Join Airbus in Friedrichshafen as a Master‑thesis student to support the FLUMIAS mission, a high‑end fluorescence microscope operating on the International Space Station. You will work in the Assembly, Integration and Test department, focusing on the validation of decoupled testing procedures for serial ISS payloads.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure the test‑stand hardware accurately reproduces the main facility’s thermal environment.
• Execute component‑level thermal test campaigns and optionally extend them to flight‑model level.
• Cross‑check telemetry from standalone test stands with data from the Engineering Model at DLR Cologne and the Flight Model.
• Identify discrepancies, propose process improvements, and document results in standardized test reports.
• Participate in test campaigns at DLR MUSC in Cologne to compare results directly.

Required profile

• Enrolled in a Master’s programme in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
• Strong analytical mindset and ability to work independently on experimental setups.
• Interest in space‑based instrumentation and thermal testing.
