Mechanical Design Engineer – Autonomous Mobility & Healthcare

About the role

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join Sphaira’s Berlin team. You will design, certify, document and manufacture our first wheelchair‑based product and later help create a revolutionary indoor autonomous vehicle for hospitals.

Key responsibilities

• Create detailed mechanical designs and 3D CAD models for wheelchair components, focusing on functionality, durability and aesthetics.
• Develop and test prototypes to validate performance, safety and compliance, iterating designs based on feedback.
• Research and select materials balancing cost, strength, weight, sustainability and manufacturability.
• Implement design modifications independently to meet evolving requirements.
• Prepare precise engineering drawings, specifications and technical documentation in line with regulatory and quality standards.
• Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure designs are cost‑effective and manufacturable.
• Work cross‑functionally with design, engineering and product teams to integrate innovative features.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or a comparable field.
• Previous experience in mechanical design, preferably in healthcare, mobility or consumer products.
• Independent, self‑responsible work style with strong problem‑solving abilities.
• Attention to detail and ability to work effectively in a team.

Required skills

• Proficiency in 3D CAD software – Fusion 360.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as welding, injection molding and CNC machining.
• Experience with G‑Suite, Jira and Confluence (advantage).
• Hands‑on experience with workshop equipment and testing tools.
• Familiarity with Python or VHDL (optional).
