Job description

About the role

The Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) offers a three‑year, DFG‑funded PhD position to investigate how reducing conditions and oxidoreductases influence the attenuation and transformation of trace organic compounds (including pharmaceuticals and iodinated contrast media) in streambed sediments and floodplain aquifers.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct field work and sampling campaigns on the River Erpe (Berlin) and in the adjacent alluvial aquifer.
  • Prepare laboratory samples and perform chemical analytics of trace organic contaminants using LC‑MS/MS.
  • Analyse water‑quality parameters and apply statistical methods to interpret data.
  • Write scientific manuscripts and present results at national and international conferences.
  • Supervise BSc/MSc theses related to the project.
  • Collaborate closely with a PhD student at TU Berlin to integrate complementary laboratory experiments.

Required profile

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in environmental chemistry, hydrology, geochemistry or a related discipline.
  • Practical experience with field sampling and laboratory work.
  • Knowledge of groundwater hydrology, biogeochemistry and chemical analysis of trace organic compounds is a plus.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis is advantageous.
  • Excellent English proficiency, including scientific writing.
  • Good communication skills, team spirit and a driver’s licence (class B).

Required skills

  • LC‑MS/MS for trace organic contaminant analysis.
  • Field sampling techniques in riverine and aquifer environments.
  • Laboratory sample preparation and chemical analytics.
  • Statistical data analysis.

What we offer

  • International, dynamic research environment located next to Lake Müggelsee.
  • Flat hierarchies and high individual freedom to develop creative solutions.
  • Three‑year funded position paid according to the German public‑sector salary scheme (75 % E13 TVöD Bund).
  • Opportunities for qualification, training and career development.
  • Support for work‑life balance and a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
