Principal Engineer – Java Backend

About the role

Engel & Völkers is looking for a Principal Engineer to lead the design and implementation of high‑performance Java backend services for the E&V Agent Platform. You will work from the Hamburg headquarters in a hybrid model, enjoying creative freedom and the chance to shape our technical architecture.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable Java backend services using Spring Boot.
• Identify and resolve database bottlenecks, optimise complex PostgreSQL queries, and improve transaction handling.
• Establish robust engineering patterns for high‑volume transactional workloads, including batch and asynchronous processing.
• Define and enforce architectural principles, tooling, and observability standards across teams.
• Evaluate modern database technologies within the Google Cloud ecosystem to ensure long‑term scalability.
• Provide cross‑team technical guidance, lead incident resolution, and conduct architecture reviews.

Required profile

• Several years of proven technical leadership or senior backend engineering experience.
• Strong ownership mindset with a proactive problem‑solving attitude.
• Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Required skills

• Java (preferably with Spring Boot).
• PostgreSQL and advanced SQL knowledge.
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform services.
• Understanding of relational database design and transaction management.
