Professorship in Architecture and Urban Design Theory

About the role

The Professorship of Architecture and Urban Design Theory is a central position within the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Architecture and Urban Design. The role involves teaching the theory of architecture and urban design from antiquity to the present, with a particular focus on the European city.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver lectures and seminars on architectural and urban design theory in German and, where appropriate, in English.
• Develop and maintain connections between theory, history, historic preservation and contemporary design practice.
• Guide students in scholarly methods, architectural analysis and criticism.
• Participate in interdisciplinary design projects in collaboration with the design module.
• Contribute to the broader cultural discourse on the architecture of the city.

Required profile

• University degree in architecture, art history or a related field.
• Doctoral degree or equivalent scholarly achievements.
• Demonstrated pedagogical aptitude and university teaching experience.
• At least three years of professional practice, with a minimum of two years outside higher‑education institutions.
• Outstanding research record in architectural and urban planning theory, evidenced by publications, conference participation or externally funded projects.
• Ability to teach in German and to a lesser extent in English, with a focus on European city theory.
