Senior Communications Officer

About the role

EMBO seeks a Senior Communications Officer to support the Head of Communications in shaping and executing the organisation’s content strategy and media relations across Europe and beyond.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement content frameworks, governance models and publishing workflows for multi‑channel campaigns.
• Manage the full editorial cycle, including research, drafting, editing and fact‑checking of scientific and policy material.
• Maintain content calendars and ensure synchronized publication across EMBO programmes.
• Produce high‑level institutional copy such as op‑eds, speeches and annual‑report contributions.
• Audit and optimise existing content repositories for accuracy and relevance.
• Develop and nurture a network of communication offices at universities, research institutes and governmental bodies.
• Serve as primary contact for media inquiries and create press assets (alerts, packages, Q&As).
• Coordinate cross‑border campaigns and joint press releases with international partners.
• Monitor media coverage, report reach metrics and support crisis communication.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or a closely related field.
• Minimum 7 years of experience in organisational communication within an international setting.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of translating complex concepts into engaging narratives.
• High political and social awareness for effective collaboration with experts and stakeholders.
• Strong organisational abilities and capacity to work autonomously.

• Fixed‑term contract of 3 years, renewable up to a total of 9 years.
• Grade 6 salary starting at €4,580.37 per month (after tax, before social‑security deductions) plus additional benefits.
