Counsellor Associate – Voluntary Return Counselling

About the role

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is seeking a Counsellor Associate to provide unbiased, individual counselling to migrants interested in voluntary return in Berlin and Rhineland‑Palatinate. The role supports migrants in understanding their options and making informed decisions about return or alternative pathways.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver counselling and up‑to‑date information on voluntary return, country‑of‑origin conditions and available AVRR support.
• Explain municipal incentives, assistance schemes and partner‑organization services.
• Facilitate contacts with state‑run, private and local relief agencies for seekers of information.
• Provide guidance on governmental, private and reintegration assistance, including medical and counselling services in the country of origin.
• Initiate support actions related to return and reintegration within existing IOM AVRR programmes.

Required profile

• University degree in Political Science, Social Science, Social Work, Pedagogy or related field with at least three years relevant experience, OR high‑school diploma with at least five years relevant experience.
• Professional experience in migration issues, project work or counselling services.
• Knowledge of German and EU institutions and migration policies is an asset.
• Familiarity with AVRR programmes and the German AVRR landscape is advantageous.
• Valid German driver’s licence.
• Fluent written and spoken English and German.
