About the role

The Helmholtz School for Data Science (HDS-LEE) offers a PhD position to work on interdisciplinary data‑science projects at the interface of life sciences, earth sciences and energy systems. The role is based at Forschungszentrum Jülich and involves close collaboration with partner institutions such as RWTH Aachen University, DLR and the University of Cologne.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct cutting‑edge research within an interdisciplinary PhD project.
• Collaborate with tandem partners across multiple universities and research institutes.
• Develop and apply data‑science methods to real‑world challenges in life, earth and energy domains.
• Participate in international networking events and present results at conferences.
• Utilise the extensive research infrastructure of Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Required profile

• Master’s degree with a strong background in mathematics, computer science and earth science/engineering or a related field.
• Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Matlab, R, C++, Julia).
• Excellent analytical abilities and a solid understanding of data evaluation.
• Good organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams.
• Motivation for academic development, supported by transcripts and two reference letters.
• Working proficiency in English (TOEFL or equivalent); knowledge of German is a plus.
