About the role

The Helmholtz School for Data Science in Life, Earth and Energy (HDS-LEE) offers a PhD position for early‑career researchers who want to address real‑world challenges at the intersection of data science, life sciences, earth sciences and energy systems. The role is based at Forschungszentrum Jülich and involves close collaboration with partner institutions such as RWTH Aachen University, DLR and the University of Cologne.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct interdisciplinary PhD research projects together with tandem partners across institutions.
• Develop and apply advanced data‑science methods to problems in life, earth and energy domains.
• Participate in cutting‑edge data‑science training, international networking events and use state‑of‑the‑art research infrastructure.
• Present research results at conferences and within the HDS‑LEE graduate school.

Required profile

• Master’s degree with a strong academic background in mathematics, computer science, earth science/engineering or a related field.
• Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Matlab, R, C++, Julia).
• Excellent analytical abilities and a solid understanding of data evaluation.
• Good organisational skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Effective communication skills and motivation for academic development, supported by transcripts and two reference letters.
• Working proficiency in English; knowledge of German is beneficial.
