Laser Diagnostician

About the role

Proxima Fusion is seeking a Laser Diagnostician to lead the design, construction and deployment of key plasma diagnostics on the Alpha stellarator. You will work closely with diagnostic experts, software engineers, fusion scientists and engineers to deliver high‑performance measurement systems that are critical for the next generation of commercial fusion power.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and build of the Thomson Scattering (TS) diagnostic for measuring electron density and temperature profiles.
• Lead the design and build of a laser‑based two‑colour or dispersion interferometer to measure line‑integrated electron density.
• Develop detailed diagnostic specifications that meet performance requirements.
• Collaborate with the Alpha engineering team to integrate diagnostics into the stellarator system.
• Manage the full product lifecycle: concept, design review, testing, installation, calibration, operation and maintenance.

Required profile

• Proven experience in laser‑based plasma diagnostics or related instrumentation.
• Ability to lead complex engineering projects from concept to operation.
• Strong collaboration skills to work across plasma physics, magnets, cryogenics, manufacturing and controls.
