Marine Researcher – Decarbonization of Shipping

About the role

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is looking for a motivated Associate Researcher or Researcher to join its Maritime Team in Berlin. The role focuses on analysing and shaping policies that decarbonise the maritime sector, covering alternative fuels, emissions, and health impacts.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research on EU and IMO policies aimed at reducing greenhouse‑gas emissions from domestic and international shipping.
• Analyse energy use and emissions data, compare policy alternatives and develop evidence‑based recommendations.
• Prepare clear publications and briefing materials for technical and non‑technical audiences.
• Present findings to internal teams, external stakeholders and, for senior level, directly to EU and IMO decision‑makers.
• Support outreach activities such as briefings, workshops and stakeholder meetings.
• Collaborate with government agencies, NGOs and other partners, and review work produced by colleagues and consultants.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, transportation, environmental science or a related field.
• Self‑motivated, dedicated and able to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for both technical and policy audiences.
