Mechanical Design Engineer – Autonomous Mobility & Healthcare

About the role

Sphaira, a deep‑tech startup in Berlin, is building the infrastructure for autonomous indoor mobility in healthcare environments. As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will lead the design, certification, documentation and manufacturing of the company’s first product and later contribute to a revolutionary indoor vehicle.

Key responsibilities

• Create detailed mechanical designs and 3D CAD models for wheelchair components, focusing on functionality, durability and aesthetics.
• Develop and test prototypes, validate performance, safety and compliance, and iterate designs based on feedback.
• Research and select materials balancing cost, strength, weight, sustainability and manufacturability.
• Implement design modifications independently to meet evolving requirements.
• Prepare precise engineering drawings, specifications and technical documentation in line with regulatory and quality standards.
• Collaborate with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure designs are cost‑effective and manufacturable.
• Work cross‑functionally with design, engineering and product teams to integrate innovative features.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or a comparable field.
• Previous experience in mechanical design, preferably in healthcare, mobility or consumer products.
• Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail and an independent, self‑responsible work style.
• Ability to work effectively in a team and adapt to fast‑changing startup environments.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Fusion 360 (3D CAD).
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as welding, injection molding and CNC machining.
• Hands‑on experience with workshop equipment and testing tools.
