Principal Engineer Application Engineering (Embedded Systems)

About the role

We are looking for a seasoned embedded systems expert to lead the development of automotive microcontroller applications. As a Principal Engineer in our MCU Tools and Ecosystem team, you will shape reference designs, drive innovation and support customers worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Own the design and implementation of complex embedded applications and reference designs for motor control, inverters and communication gateways using Renesas MCUs.
• Provide deep technical direction on low‑level firmware, real‑time operating systems, hardware abstraction layers and performance optimisation.
• Act as senior technical advisor for strategic automotive customers, assisting integration and deployment of MCU solutions.
• Support marketing and sales teams with technical expertise during design activities and deliver training to FAEs, partners and customers.
• Collaborate closely with hardware and software groups to ensure robust, scalable solutions.
• Mentor junior engineers and promote knowledge sharing across the application engineering team.

Required profile

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of embedded software development experience, preferably in the automotive sector.
• Proven ability to drive projects from concept to completion in an international environment.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

Required skills

• Embedded processors and microcontroller architectures for automotive applications.
• Automotive operating systems and real‑time OS concepts.
• Communication protocols: CAN, LIN, FlexRay, Ethernet.
• Low‑level programming in C and scripting in Python.
• Development and debugging of drivers, HALs and middleware.
• Board‑level design, circuit analysis and use of oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
• Automated and system‑level testing frameworks.
