Software Engineer - Backend

About the role

Helsing, a defence AI company, is looking for a Backend Software Engineer to join its European teams. You will help build AI‑driven capabilities and the infrastructure that enables semi‑autonomous platforms to perceive, navigate and act in real time under demanding technical constraints.

Key responsibilities

• Review code contributions, proposals and RFCs from colleagues, prioritising unblocking others.
• Design, implement and ship new features, algorithms, infrastructure components or full products across the stack.
• Collaborate across teams to identify missed opportunities and propose innovative solutions.
• Mentor junior engineers and support their professional development.

Required profile

• Mission‑driven mindset with a strong interest in defence‑related AI applications.
• Willingness to work on complex, safety‑critical systems that operate in changing environments.
• Ability to engage in open, transparent discussions about ethical implications of technology.

Required skills

• Experience with distributed systems (e.g., intermittent connectivity, Byzantine actors).
• Knowledge of embedded computing constraints and reverse‑engineering techniques.
• Familiarity with robotics control systems and tasking.
• Understanding of networking challenges such as long‑range low‑bandwidth radios and cross‑medium routing.
• Expertise in deployment infrastructure for air‑gapped devices and heterogeneous fleets.
• Security awareness for low‑trust, no‑TLS networks and secret data handling.
• Background in machine‑learning systems for model development, storage and dissemination.
