Applied AI Engineer – Startup Focus (Codex)

About the role

OpenAI is looking for an Applied AI Engineer who will work directly with early‑stage startups to help them integrate Codex into their software development workflows. You will combine hands‑on engineering, startup experience, and clear technical communication to turn AI coding tools into practical, repeatable solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with top startups to identify high‑impact use cases for Codex and design integration strategies.
• Design and lead technical talks, live demos, workshops, hackathons, and repeatable programmes that drive sustained adoption.
• Work directly with selected customers to build Codex workflows, resolve technical blockers, and evaluate reliability.
• Create reusable code examples, guides, and tools that enable more startups to succeed with Codex.
• Collaborate with account teams, developer experience, and ecosystem partners to prioritize opportunities and deliver measurable value.
• Translate developer feedback into actionable insights for OpenAI’s product, research, and engineering teams.

Required profile

• Experience building at, founding, or closely working with early‑stage startups and understanding their fast‑paced, ambiguous environment.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and a passion for building practical AI applications and developer tools.
• Active user of Codex or other AI coding tools with thoughtful ideas on improving software development.
• Compelling communicator who enjoys presenting, delivering live demos, and leading hands‑on workshops for developers and founders.
• Ability to turn complex technical ideas into clear explanations, engaging examples, and reusable resources.
• High agency, curiosity, and end‑to‑end ownership while collaborating effectively with colleagues and ecosystem partners.

Required skills

• Experience with Codex or comparable AI coding tools.
• Solid software engineering fundamentals (e.g., coding, debugging, integration).
• Ability to build developer‑focused tools, APIs, and automation workflows.
• Strong technical communication and presentation skills.
