Mechanical‑Optical Design Engineer – Precision Instruments

About the role

Trimble is seeking a Mechanical‑Optical Design Engineer to lead the development of next‑generation robotic total stations and terrestrial laser scanners. Based in Jena, you will bridge digital and physical worlds, applying AI and advanced manufacturing to create high‑precision geodetic instruments.

Key responsibilities

• Spearhead mechanical‑optical design for robotic total stations and laser scanners.
• Integrate AI methods throughout product development to enhance performance.
• Conduct principle tests, tolerance calculations and failure analyses to achieve sub‑millimeter accuracy.
• Produce high‑fidelity prototypes using 3D printing and perform initial sample inspections.
• Select specialized components and manage complex assemblies within an Agile PLM environment.

Required profile

• Fluent in German and English, able to work in a multinational team.
• Degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering or Precision Engineering.
• Proven experience designing mechanical and optical assemblies for high‑precision instruments.
• Background in failure analysis and supporting quality departments.

Required skills

• Advanced CAD proficiency – CREO 10 and CREO Simulate.
• 3D printing for industrial prototyping.
• Agile PLM software usage.
• Tolerance analysis and sub‑millimeter precision calculations.
• Failure analysis techniques.
