Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

The Mechanical Design Engineer will join our hardware team to develop the mechanical hardware for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems. You will be responsible for the full product lifecycle, from concept through CAD, prototyping, manufacturing, and integration of custom 19‑inch rack‑mounted enclosures and internal modules.

Key responsibilities

• Design custom 19‑inch rack‑mounted enclosures using folded sheet‑metal, including bend allowances and DFM considerations.
• Create internal mechanical components such as mounting trays, brackets, and optical/electronic module housings.
• Develop CNC‑machined parts, generate manufacturing drawings, BOMs, and manage supplier relationships.
• Drive prototype builds, fit‑checks, and iterate designs to production readiness.
• Support EMC and compliance through mechanical solutions (gasketing, grounding, bonding).
• Collaborate with optics, electronics, FPGA, and software teams on mechanical interfaces and documentation.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 3+ years experience designing mechanical hardware for instrumentation, telecom, or datacenter products.
• Hands‑on experience with 19‑inch rack‑mount enclosures.
• Ability to work on‑site in Munich or Potsdam and right to work in Germany.
• Eligibility for a U.S. Secret or EU SECRET security clearance.

Required skills

• Sheet‑metal design (folded/bent parts, bend allowances, DFM).
• CNC‑machined part design (milling, fits, tolerances, finishes).
• Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (e.g., Fusion 360).
• Design‑for‑manufacture and tolerance analysis.
• Creation of manufacturing drawing packages and BOMs.
