Neutronics Engineer – Stellarator Design

About the role

Proxima Fusion is seeking a Neutronics Engineer to join its Munich team and support the design and licensing of the Alpha stellarator, a next‑generation fusion power plant. You will conduct reproducible neutronics simulations and help automate the simulation workflow.

Key responsibilities

• Perform neutronics analysis using OpenMC and DAGMC for neutron and photon responses critical to stellarator optimization.
• Generate shutdown dose‑rate maps, magnet heating distributions, tritium breeding, displacement‑per‑atom (DPA) and activation results from both CSG and CAD‑based models.
• Integrate neutronics calculations into automated pipelines, employing Python scripting, version control (Git/Graphite) and Docker containers.
• Validate simulation outcomes by comparing OpenMC results with alternative codes and contribute to verification and validation activities.
• Collaborate with machine‑learning experts, software engineers, fusion scientists and engineers to ensure neutronics considerations are embedded in the overall design.

Required profile

• Strong background in nuclear engineering or related field with experience in neutronics simulations.
• Proficiency in Python programming and familiarity with Git version control.
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, fast‑moving environment and communicate results clearly.
