Plasma Spectroscopy Diagnostician

About the role

Proxima Fusion is seeking a Plasma Spectroscopy Diagnostician to lead the design, build, and deployment of spectroscopic diagnostics on the Alpha stellarator in Munich. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑performance measurements of ion temperature, impurity concentration, and plasma flow, contributing directly to the development of commercial fusion energy.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the end‑to‑end development of spectroscopic diagnostic systems for the Alpha stellarator.
• Define detailed specifications for charge‑exchange emission, crystal spectrometer, and broadband spectroscopic instruments covering visible to X‑ray and vacuum‑ultraviolet ranges.
• Collaborate with engineering, software, and plasma physics teams to integrate diagnostics into the machine architecture.
• Oversee testing, installation, calibration, operation, and maintenance throughout the diagnostic lifecycle.
• Provide technical reviews and documentation to ensure compliance with performance and safety standards.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (PhD or MSc) in plasma physics, spectroscopy, or a related field.
• Proven experience designing and implementing plasma diagnostics for fusion devices.
• Strong understanding of charge‑exchange spectroscopy, crystal spectrometry, and broadband optical systems.
• Ability to work in a fast‑moving, interdisciplinary environment and manage complex projects.
