Accountant – Finance Team (Heidelberg)

About the role

We are seeking a detail‑oriented Accountant to join EMBL’s finance team in Heidelberg. The role will support accounts payable, fixed‑asset accounting, tax‑refund claims and general accounting activities, ensuring smooth financial operations within an international research environment.

Key responsibilities

• Process supplier invoices accurately and on time, reconcile AP balances and resolve discrepancies.
• Maintain vendor master data, coordinate with Treasury for timely payments, and handle corporate credit‑card and employee expense transactions.
• Maintain fixed‑asset master data, record asset transactions, run depreciation, and produce asset reports.
• Prepare and submit tax‑refund claims, reconcile refunded amounts and keep supporting documentation.
• Support month‑end and year‑end closing, record accruals/deferrals, assist internal and external audits, and contribute to finance‑related projects.

Required profile

• Proactive, ownership‑driven and strong problem‑solver.
• Deadline‑oriented, self‑motivated and diligent in applying internal controls.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Finance or related field; CIMA or ACCA is a plus.
• Relevant experience in accounts payable, VAT operations or financial administration, preferably in an international, multicultural setting.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with diverse staff.
• Fluency in English and Spanish, French or German.
