Android Engineer (Mobile Payments)

About the role

As an Android Engineer in SumUp’s Hardware Tribe, you will join a small, cross‑functional team that builds the mobile experience for millions of merchants worldwide. Working on‑site in Berlin, you will collaborate with product managers, backend, iOS, and design colleagues to deliver reliable Bluetooth connectivity, payment features, and user‑facing screens for SumUp’s card readers and SDK.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and ship payment‑related features for the Android SumUp app and SDK, including BLE connections, online/offline payments, and tap‑to‑pay.
• Refactor existing code to improve reliability, performance, and scalability.
• Define and implement technical road‑maps in partnership with the broader Mobile chapter.
• Design and enhance the developer experience for internal and external SDK users.

Required profile

• Product‑mindset with the ability to own features from concept to delivery.
• Comfortable adapting to changing priorities in a fast‑moving fintech environment.
• Strong attention to detail and focus on user interaction and usability.

Required skills

• Kotlin and Java programming languages.
• Android framework and architecture patterns such as MVVM and MVI.
• Experience with modular, scalable app architecture.
• Knowledge of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) integration.
• Proficiency in writing flexible, maintainable tests.
