Head of AI – Lead AI Department and Strategy

About the role

We are looking for a visionary Head of AI to lead CARIAD’s AI Department within the Processes, Methods and Tools (TZ) unit. You will shape AI strategy, drive R&D efficiency, and ensure compliance with emerging regulations across the Volkswagen Group.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop the AI Department within TZ.
• Steer CARIAD’s portfolio of (Gen)AI‑based R&D efficiency measures and process optimisations.
• Guide TZ development activities to deliver state‑of‑the‑art (gen)AI for PMT and process optimisation.
• Govern Process AI development across CARIAD R&D and the wider Volkswagen Group.
• Represent CARIAD in Volkswagen Group Process AI consolidation initiatives.
• Define and execute the tech strategy for Process AI in close alignment with tech centres and enterprise IT.
• Own the AI development process at CARIAD.
• Build central governance for the EU AI Act within CARIAD.
• Innovate new AI application fields to accelerate CARIAD and Volkswagen R&D.

Required profile

• University degree in computer science, IT, technical economics, electrical engineering or a related field.
• At least 5 years of experience in a tech company, management consulting, or OEM, leading teams.
• Deep understanding of process AI and AI‑based automation.
• Proven experience in forming AI strategies, leading AI teams, and governing technology domains.
• Agile mindset with strong leadership and motivational skills.
• Track record of driving transformation and strategy projects focused on cost and efficiency.
• Strong project‑management experience with high‑priority, complex projects involving C‑level stakeholders.
• Excellent communication, self‑organisation, and executive stakeholder‑management abilities.
• Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment with professionalism, proactiveness and resilience.
• Experience working with alignment and governance bodies within Volkswagen; knowledge of PMT is a plus.
