Mechanical Design Engineer, Safety and Restraints

About the role

Join Tesla’s Vehicle Engineering team in Berlin as a Mechanical Design Engineer focused on Safety and Restraints. You will own the development of airbag, seat‑belt and crash‑sensing systems from concept through production release and in‑service support, ensuring they meet Tesla’s safety targets and homologation requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Lead system integration for safety‑restraint commodities, collaborating with global Safety & Restraints teams and European cross‑functional partners.
• Manage engineering change implementation, coordinate line trials, and communicate impact on safety performance, quality, cost and schedule.
• Work with suppliers through RFQ, DVP, DFMEA/FMA and launch stages to meet vehicle launch milestones.
• Define program requirements, workflows and risk mitigation plans for new safety‑restraint systems.
• Oversee system validation, including test planning, execution, sample inspection, reporting and creation of Test Incident Reports (TIRs).
• Compile part lists for crash‑vehicle retrofitting and ensure timely delivery of components for testing.

Required profile

• Strong understanding of automotive safety‑restraint development and homologation processes.
• Experience coordinating cross‑functional projects and managing timelines, risks and critical paths.
• Proven ability to work with suppliers on DFM, DFMEA and validation activities.
• Hands‑on experience with system testing, root‑cause analysis and corrective‑action implementation.

Required skills

• Computer‑Aided Design (CAD) for mechanical components.
• Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Validation (DFV) methodologies.
• Supplier quality tools: DFMEA/FMA, DVP, RFQ processes.
• System validation and test planning, execution and reporting.
• Creation and management of Test Incident Reports (TIRs).
• Knowledge of airbags, seat‑belts, crash and pedestrian sensing technologies.
• Familiarity with homologation requirements for safety systems.
